Yesteryear Collection

It was built for only the most powerful and the wealthiest. Issued in a limited edition, it was targeted to important heads of state, dignitaries and prominent businessmen. And it became known as the "Grosser Mercedes," for the 1938 Mercedes-Benz was larger than life in virtually every respect; power, luxury, size and sheer opulence. The Mercedes-Benz 770K was a stunning touring car, weighing more than 8,000 pounds. It was powered by a straight-eight engine that displaced an incredible 467 cubic inches (7655 cc) and was fitted with a supercharger. The impressive power plant produced up to 230 horsepower (with the supercharger) and ultimately could reach 110 miles per hour. The prodigious power was necessary to operate such a vehicle for, even without the armour-plating that many of its customers demanded, the 770K was heavier than any other motorcar and was mounted on a wheelbase nearly 13 feet long. The limousine version stretched to over 20 feet. Befitting a vehicle of such grandeur, the Mercedes-Benz 770K was a storeroom of luxury, handcrafted with fine hardwoods, elegant upholsteries and a full array of amenities. In all, there were only 117 Mercedes-Benz 770K's built. Among its owners were Emperor Hirohito of Japan and ex-Kaiser Willhelm II,. Steeped in historical associations and crafted like no other vehicle in the world, the Mercedes-Benz 770K truly looms large in the annals of automotive history. Now, the 1938 Mercedes-Benz 770K is re-created in a precision-engineered replica crafted in the 1:48 collectors scale. This sumptuously appointed die-cast model is produced by - and available exclusively from - Matchbox collectibles, the greatest name in die-cast.
